Chapter Sixteen

Firefly

Mara followed Accalia up the snowy trail of Grey Mountain, taking extra care with Nightingale’s remains. Her face felt frozen from the frigid air as tears streamed down her cheeks.

The witch glanced at her. “Did your sword mean a lot to you?”

“Dad made it before he died,” Mara replied.

Accalia became silent for a moment. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

Mara walked ahead. “Let’s get back. The last thing we need is a snow beast.”

The large iron doors of Greyward Hold greeted the two women. Accalia pushed on the doors to let themselves in. Upon entering, Mara spotted Jen, Beatrice, and the other two sages. They were all waiting for their return. Accalia approached Milo and Nikolai. She whispered to them while often glancing at Mara. The huntress figured the witch was telling them about their encounter with the hellhound.

Jen and Beatrice approached Mara.

“Been looking for you two,” Beatrice began. “Hope you weren’t on a hunt.”

“I’m afraid your warning came a little too late.” Mara unsheathed Nightingale.

Both former Silver Thorns stared at the broken blade with a disturbed expression.

“Damn,” Jen murmured, shaking her head. “You too.”

Unable to stomach the sight, Mara sheathed Nightingale. “Talon claimed someone sabotaged his forge, but I think he did it on purpose.”

Beatrice folded her arms. “I find this hard to believe. He cares about his craft.”

“He had that break-in the other day,” Jen added.

Mara gazed at Jen. “Can your father reforge my sword?”

Jen placed her hands on her hips and nodded. “Let’s go see him. If he can’t, he could at least forge a new weapon.”

The huntress followed the former Silver Thorn to the forge. Walt had just finished forging some new swords.

“You have another one for me?” he asked.

Jen nodded. “She also fell victim.”

Mara unsheathed Nightingale. “Can you repair it?”

Walt stared at the blade with wonder and dread. “Do you have the rest?”

Mara handed over her sheath, which contained the rest of the blade.

He took it and laid the shards on the anvil. He frowned as he studied them. “It is possible, but will require much time and money.”

“But you say it’s possible?” Mara inquired.

“Yes, though it may not be worth it.” He gestured to the new blades. “Jen and Beatrice’s swords couldn’t be salvaged due to the corrosion.” Walt turned his attention to Nightingale’s remains. “This one doesn’t appear as bad.” He took a closer look. “Interesting, this possesses a siderite core. Your father was a skilled blacksmith.”

Mara sulked. “And he’s dead…”

He gazed at her with a sympathetic look. “I’m afraid I won’t be of much help since I’m merely a journeyman. But you could ask Raymon of Corlin or Talon, for they are considered master blacksmiths.” He gazed back at Nightingale. “Still, siderite is very rare to come by.”

“I’d imagine the mines are tapped dry,” Jen said.

“If I recall, Godstruck had a siderite core,” Beatrice added.

Mara sighed, “Kallikratés destroyed that sword.”

“If the shards of that sword are still around, it may be possible to reforge this blade,” Walt said. “As long as you have the diagram.
